About the Artist:
As one of the greatest innovators of the conjunto music genre, the legendary
Valerio Longoria, considered a "genius" accordionist by many, developed a totally
distinctive style that was vibrant, passionate, and polished. He is credited
with so many innovations within the genre including being one of the first musicians
to perform standing up with straps on, as well as one of the first to sing where
previously the music had all been instrumental.
As an expert accordionist who knew his instrument inside and out, Valerio experimented with retuning the reed combinations of the the button accordion, giving him the ability to play a range of notes previously never heard of before in conjunto music, expanding the musical range of the button accordion to its full potential. Valerio was also one of the first to incorporate the modern drum set to the conjunto ensemble. He is also credited with introducing to conjunto the very romantic style of the Mexican bolero, a Caribbean music with Afro-Cuban roots. Valerio's beautiful elegant voice became as much of a trademark as his amazing accordion artistry.
A gifted teacher, Valerio Longoria also taught accordion at the Guadalupe Cultural
Arts Center of San Antonio, Texas as the resident accordion master instructor.
He was one of the first inductees into the Conjunto Hall of Fame in 1982, the
year that the Hall of Fame was established by the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center.
In 1986, Valerio Longoria received the National Heritage Award, the nation's
highest honor for folk artists. Don Valerio Longoria's career spanned over fifty
years. He passed away at the age of 76 in December of 2000, leaving a musical
legacy for generations to come.
