Oscar Hernandez sound as he plays a diverse repertoire of conjunto styles from
rare shottische and mazurka to traditional polka, ranchera, and bolero and also
includes original compositions. Playing with Myself is a must for any conjunto collection.
Master Accordionist Oscar Hernandez has been one of the most influential conjunto accordionists in the history of the genre with a distinct style all his own.Born in Pharr, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley, Hernandez has been playing the accordion since the age of eleven. At the age of 13, he not only formed his first conjunto group, but recorded for the first time.
Oscar Hernandez is greatly admired for introducing the five row chromatic accordion to conjunto music as a prominent member of the unforgettable Conjunto Bernal. The duet accordion sound created by Hernandez and Bernal was truly original and ahead of its time. It introduced a new development in the genre of Conjunto.
Today, Oscar performs with his band, Oscar Hernandez and the Tuff Band. A gifted teacher, he devotes time to passing on his knowledge and passion for the accordion to youth who are interested in learning how to play an instrument that is an integral part of the Mexican American culture of Texas. He is often invited to hold accordion workshops throughout the South Texas Region.
Recently, Oscar Hernandez was inducted into the Conjunto Hall of Fame in San Antonio, Texas, in recognition of his major contributions to Conjunto Music.
